Flash back: A while back I did a piece on who I thought were worthy enough to be Champions league contender’s, I left out Manchester United and yes fans were (Insert curse word) Bitching saying this and that, I was accused of being biased and all sorts of bull.
Saturday May 28 Barcelona finally proved why from the get go I thought of the red devils as pretenders and not contender’s to the throne, after simple…no easy victories against Schalke and Chelsea the United army for some reason thought they could win at Wembley. What happened in the next 90 minutes was a massacre.
The duo of Messi, Iniesta and Xavi had an easy night watching UTD fall into their hands slowly by slowly. Xavi the mid-field general kept strolling goal wards and after a number of unchallenged touches found Pedro who smashed the ball past hopeless 40 year old Van der Sar. Next was Messi who also unleashed a shot from approx. 25 yards to catch the defense off guard once more.
Barcelona clearly broke down United with their accurate passing, and it was amazing to see how composed and relaxed the Barca lads are with the ball. Watching Xavi school Carrick in the art of midfield domination was another fine moment in soccer too. He touched the ball 163 times while the poor lad Carrick could only manage a mere 54 touches. The champions made a total of 148 passes, 141 of those completed with a success rate of 95%, showing why he is the mid field master Xavi ran a total of 8 miles while Carrick only managed 5 miles, a lesson indeed.
After a lesson well learnt I expect Sir Alex to tinker with his squad a little bit, like any other coach who has dreams of mounting a serious challenge in Europe come next season.
United were clearly out done in every way possible, the thrashing they got should be enough to shut up the red devils brigade for a while.
Verdict: Barcelona deserve to be champions of Europe. How about united…un worthy contenders I guess.
